Scene 6, this scene introduces the characters as they arrive at the train station. Originally including the stalker character, however he was removed after.
Scene 4 transitioned from scene 3 and showed us more of the world before having a train hurtle suddenly into our face.
Scene 3 was originally implemented into the animation to give the viewers a feeling for what the world actually looked like on the surface without any distracting actions before panning to the side and bringing the train into play. In the storyboard it was designed to give off a sense of baroness and hostility with restrictive metal fences and large mountain spaces spanning the horizon. However from taking that into the production stages the environment became a lot more vibrant and colorful, I had to find a way to balance the background and the restrictive nature originally intended without taking away from the detail I wanted to present in the scene. in the end I decided to include the frame of the fence without the in between and make it more apparent that it was a restricted area through the placement of a red stop sign (generally universal language for do not enter).
Scene 2 was always drawn up as an introductionary scene to the planet, I wanted it to be obvious from the get go that this was not meant to be based on Earth, this way viewers would know to go into this production expecting more science fiction than close to home. You can see how the idea developed well from storyboard to its finalized version. The first scene of the animation is a very quick introduction scene showcasing my logo and Defective/arts name. Originally it was designed to be a tape recorder to match the sound effect in the background which would then blend into the next scene with a VCR styled effect. However I found that after creating scene 2 this effect would not work well in my favor so instead I kept it simple and included a slow fade of the background and then a quick fade of my logo as it blends into the next scene which starts black and then fades in stars and eventually the planet. Here is an example of how this scene progressed from storyboard to completion. With the first three scenes showing a reference video I used along with the early drafts of the scene and then the final three scenes being screenshots of the the finished version. - Edit. Find below the exported version of the scene (it is meant to be fast). As this module of the project focuses on the production aspects instead of the Pre-Production I will roughly provide a recap on such. If you are interested in looking into the pre-productive side of the project please click here to a blog that covers such. Here is my animatic for this project. Since this was created the story changed from the two boys being followed to just the two boys, I chose to do this solely on the fact that I felt that it emitted the wrong sense of mystery in that, I wanted to work with child like mystery in that sense that a lot of children experience when they are younger. Climbing trees, making forts in the woods and exploring. Often captured in movies like The Goonies and in some ways Stephen Kings It you get a real sense of naive mystery. As opposed to a more aggressive sense of mystery that would have been portrayed by having a character follow the boys around as it would draw the audience away from what the boys are discovering and instead end up focusing on understanding the stalkers motives. Also here is my sound file. It consists of three smiletron tracks mixed together to fit the story I want to portray. With each song representing an arc in the story, and 3 arcs in total. I originally intended to animate all 3 segments however for the sake of project duration mirroring how long I have available before university submission it will have to be cut to two scenes at best. And the rest to be completed outside of university after graduation. Here is a character sheet I drafted up for the boys. Originally the canine character was supposed to be represented in a docile manner whilst the reptilian character would lead, this was originally made to reflect the later events that would have happened if the script had not been changed to remove the stalker figure.
Now that the stalker no longer exists in the story I decided to change the character personalities around with Reptile being docile and shy whilst the Canine being more headstrong and leading. |
